Guide · AEO for B2B SaaS

B2B SaaS buyers no longer start their evaluations on Google — they start in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. The vendors those engines cite become the shortlist. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you make sure your product is the default recommendation when a buyer asks "what's the best tool for X?" — and it's won on E-E-A-T signals, schema, and citation-worthy content, not on keyword volume.
A typical enterprise software purchase touches 6–10 stakeholders and stretches across weeks. Historically buyers ran Google searches, downloaded analyst reports, and scanned review sites. In 2026 the first pass happens inside an answer engine: a product manager asks Perplexity for "the best customer support platform for a 200-person B2B SaaS", and the three vendors it names become the entire shortlist. If you're not cited there, you don't get evaluated — see our guide on checking whether ChatGPT recommends your site for the manual test.
Answer engines are risk-averse when recommending vendors — a bad citation damages the engine's credibility. So they weight Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust more heavily than for consumer queries. That means named authors with Person schema and sameAs links, transparent pricing, real customer numbers, and third-party mentions (analyst reports, comparison sites, podcast appearances) matter more than keyword density.
Compare this to classic SEO — the mechanics diverge sharply, and our AEO vs SEO comparison walks through the differences.
When a B2B answer engine names you first, you inherit trust the engine has built with the buyer. That converts to shorter sales cycles, higher win rates against unnamed competitors, and outsized share of the "who should I even evaluate?" conversation. The playbook to get there is in the 2026 AEO strategy guide.
B2B software evaluations are long, research-heavy, and involve multiple stakeholders. Buyers now open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini to shortlist vendors before they ever hit your site. If the answer engine doesn't cite you, you're not in the shortlist — and the buyer never sees your homepage, ads, or sales team.
Google ranks pages; answer engines pick sentences. To be cited you need lead answers, explicit definitions, comparison tables, and Product / Organization schema. And because LLMs weight E-E-A-T heavily, an unattributed marketing page loses to a named-author explainer with sameAs links, even if the marketing page ranks higher on Google.
Technical fixes (schema, SSR, llms.txt) can flip a page from uncited to cited within a few crawl cycles — often 2–4 weeks. Authority signals (author bios, external mentions, third-party comparisons) compound over 2–3 quarters. Track citation rate weekly, not daily.
Yes — AEO is additive, not a replacement. The same page can rank #3 on Google and never be cited by Perplexity if it lacks a lead answer, schema, or a named author. Retrofitting AEO onto pages that already rank is the highest-leverage move because those pages already earn crawler attention.
